There is concern that the rise in youth unemployment is a precursor to the overall labor market deteriorating. It is possible this is the case, but the issue seems to be global. The more I dig into it, it seems to be a sociological issue more than an economic one.

Fair warning: Anytime we cover sociological or demographic developments, it comes with generalizations about groups of people. Those generalizations can sometimes be interpreted badly by people, which is not my intention. I am not here insinuating I have all the answers on this topic, but I go where my research takes me and I think something else is going on with the youth. This note comes with many pieces of anecdotal evidence rather than hard evidence, so the point is to simply make us think about the topic.

There is a clear divide happening between recent graduate unemployment and the rest of the economy, and it has really accelerated since COVID.
